Facial Pain can occur due to various causes. Depending on the location and type of your pain the cause may differ. For example dull aching pain around your mouth could be due to tooth infection, whereas pressure like pain around your cheeks could be sinusitis. Sometimes pain in the face is felt like a shock or an electric current, this could be due to nerve pain in your face, also called as neuralgia. The cause of neuralgic pain may include Trigeminal neuralgia, Glossopharyngeal neuralgia, Neuralgia of the intermediate nerve, Superior laryngeal neuralgia, Occipital Neuralgia etc. depending on the nerve involved. Rarely despite of thorough evaluation by multiple doctors & investigations, the cause of the pain is not found. This type of pain is persistent, occurs daily, is located in a particular part of your face & present almost throughout the day. This pain is also called as PIFP or Persistent Idiopathic Facial Pain. Other causes of facial pain include but not limited to Temporomandibular joint disorders, Ear disorders, Headaches, Pain referred from the neck, herpes zoster or post herpetic neuralgia, Cancer pain.
